This 1 Company Is By Far the Largest Contributor to Second-Quarter S&P 500 Earnings Growth
Alphabet drove second-quarter S&P 500 earnings growth more than any other company after reporting $9.11 EPS against expectations of $2.90. The search giant's outperformance was so significant that without it, the index's earnings growth would have dropped from 37.9% to 25.9%—a 12-percentage-point swing.
The majority of Alphabet's beat came from $98 billion in unrealized gains on equity holdings, with $94 billion tied to its SpaceX stake following the rocket company's June IPO. The windfall highlights how Alphabet's venture portfolio is becoming a meaningful earnings driver beyond its core advertising and cloud businesses.
Alphabet also holds a substantial position in AI startup Anthropic, which remains private. A future Anthropic public offering could deliver another round of mark-to-market gains that would similarly inflate reported earnings.
The earnings composition matters for index-level analysis. Core operating performance across the S&P 500 remains softer than headline numbers suggest when one company's paper gains on private holdings account for nearly one-third of total growth.
