United Rentals' Specialty Revenue Surges 35%: What Comes Next?

United Rentals (URI) raised its 2026 revenue guidance to $18–$18.2B after a strong third quarter, led by Specialty Rentals revenue jumping 34.7% to $1.70B. The segment's gross margins expanded 250 basis points, pointing to growth that is coming with better profitability rather than at its expense.

The company also added 12 Specialty locations, extending the footprint behind that revenue surge. Interpretation: the combination of location growth, margin expansion, and a higher full-year revenue range suggests management sees Specialty demand holding through the rest of 2026.

Risks remain. Rising equipment costs and labor inflation pose profitability threats, and either could erode the 250 basis points of margin gained this quarter if they outpace pricing. Competition is also a factor: URI faces Herc Holdings (HRI) and WillScot (WSC) in the specialized rental market, where rivals can pressure rates and share as the segment grows.

The 34.7% growth rate sets a high bar. With guidance already lifted, the market will likely focus on whether URI can sustain Specialty momentum while absorbing higher input costs.
