Visa to Buy Fraud Defense Platform BioCatch in $2.4 Billion Deal
Visa Inc. (V) will acquire BioCatch, a behavioral biometrics fraud-detection platform, for $2.4 billion in cash. The deal arms the payment giant with technology that analyzes user behavior patterns—keystrokes, mouse movements, device interactions—to flag account takeovers and synthetic identity fraud in real time.
BioCatch's tools are embedded in more than 200 financial institutions globally, screening billions of digital sessions annually. Visa plans to integrate the platform across its network to bolster anti-fraud defenses as card-not-present fraud accelerates in digital payments. The transaction is expected to close in the second half of 2025, subject to regulatory approval.
The acquisition follows Visa's $1 billion purchase of Plaid's competing assets in 2021 and underscores the company's strategy to monetize value-added services beyond core interchange fees. BioCatch will operate as a standalone unit within Visa, preserving its ability to serve non-Visa networks and fintechs.
