Wall Street Scrapped a 25-Year-Old Rule. Does It Make Robinhood Stock a Buy Right Now?

The Financial Industry Regulatory Authority has scrapped the pattern day trader rule, effective June 4, 2026, replacing the 25-year-old $25,000 minimum equity requirement with a $2,000 floor and risk-based margin framework. The change directly targets Robinhood Markets (HOOD), whose users maintain average account balances around $4,000—well below the previous threshold that blocked them from making more than three day trades in five business days.

The regulatory shift could materially lift Robinhood's transaction volumes. More frequent trades translate to higher payment for order flow revenues and increased margin interest income, both core to the company's business model. The old PDT rule acted as a structural brake on activity from the platform's retail-heavy user base.

The opportunity comes with valuation headwinds. HOOD currently trades at 46x forward earnings, suggesting the market has already priced in significant growth expectations. Whether the PDT rule removal can justify that multiple depends on how aggressively newly-liberated traders increase activity when the change takes effect in mid-2026.
