Why Advanced Micro Devices Stock Slipped on Friday
Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) dropped 2.9% on Friday following reports that OpenAI may postpone its initial public offering until 2027 to chase a higher valuation. The delay sparked immediate concern about demand for AI chips from one of the sector's most prominent players.
However, analysts played down the threat to AMD's revenue pipeline. OpenAI has already locked in a multi-billion dollar chip purchase agreement with the company that spans five years, meaning the semiconductor maker's revenue from the AI lab remains contractually secured regardless of when—or if—OpenAI goes public. The existing commitment insulates AMD from IPO timing risk.
The Friday selloff appears driven more by market psychology than fundamental changes to AMD's order book. With the purchase agreement in place, OpenAI's capital markets strategy shouldn't materially affect AMD's near-term sales or margins tied to that customer relationship.
