Why Bloom Energy Stock Tumbled Today

Bloom Energy (BE) tumbled between 5% and 13% after reaching an all-time high, as competing energy solutions for AI data centers emerged to challenge the company's market position. The sell-off came as traders reassessed Bloom's growth runway in the data center power market.

Two specific deals undercut the AI-power-monopoly thesis. Chevron and Microsoft announced a partnership deploying natural gas turbines to power data centers, offering an alternative to Bloom's solid oxide fuel cells. Separately, the U.S. Department of Energy unveiled a financing initiative for nuclear reactors targeting data center applications, opening a third competing pathway for hyperscalers seeking reliable baseload power.

The moves signal that data center operators are pursuing multiple energy technologies rather than betting exclusively on any single vendor. Bloom had rallied to its all-time high on expectations it would capture outsized share of AI infrastructure build-out, but the Chevron-Microsoft deal and DOE nuclear push demonstrate that natural gas turbines and small modular reactors remain viable—and actively pursued—alternatives.
