Why Comfort Systems Plunged Today

FIX plunged 9.36% despite a clean earnings beat, as a CFO retirement announcement and "sell the news" selling in AI-linked names overwhelmed the results.

Comfort Systems posted 53.7% revenue growth and 68.6% EPS growth, with EPS reaching $13.91. Both revenue and earnings topped estimates. The market looked past the numbers anyway.

Two drivers stand out. First, CFO Bill George announced his retirement, introducing leadership transition uncertainty on the same day as the print. Second, AI-related stocks broadly faced "sell the news" pressure, with investors questioning whether the AI data center build-out can sustain growth beyond 2027.

The valuation picture is now notably different. FIX trades at 19.4x forward 2027 earnings, and the shares sit 38% below their June high. Interpretation: a stock that grew EPS nearly 69% and still fell this hard suggests positioning was crowded into the print, and that the market is pricing duration risk on the AI build-out rather than near-term execution.
