Why Did Infosys Stock Pop on Thursday?

INFY jumped 6.6% on Thursday, riding the coattails of ACN's fiscal Q4 earnings beat. Traders are betting that ACN's strength carries over to INFY ahead of its October 23 earnings report.

ACN topped expectations on both lines. Revenue came in at $18.7 billion against $18 billion expected, a beat of roughly 3.9%. Earnings per share landed at $3.29 versus the $3.19 consensus, about 3.1% above estimates. The market read that as a signal for the broader IT services space, and INFY took the biggest move.

Interpretation: the 6.6% pop looks like a read-through trade rather than a reaction to INFY-specific news. The company has not yet reported, so the move prices in hope, not results.

The setup into October 23 is lopsided. Analysts expect 10.7% sales growth, a demanding bar. They expect only 5% earnings growth, a low bar. The author argues INFY needs meaningfully faster earnings growth than 5% to qualify as a buy, since the stock already carries the sympathy rally.
