Why GE Vernova Stock Fell on Friday

GE Vernova (GEV) dropped 4.9% on Friday despite a Q3 report that checked nearly every box, as an AI infrastructure sell-off pulled the stock lower and multiple analysts trimmed price targets.

The numbers were strong. Revenue grew 27% year over year, and the backlog hit a record $197 billion. Management also raised full-year guidance and doubled its buyback authorization. Separately, GEV announced a $9 billion acquisition of Trench Group.

The selling pressure came from two sources: the broader AI infrastructure pullback and analyst concerns over conversion timing, meaning how quickly that massive backlog turns into recognized revenue, and over margin expansion. Even so, the analysts who lowered targets remained bullish on the long-term outlook.

Interpretation: a stock that sells off on a beat-and-raise quarter, a bigger buyback, and a record backlog is being priced on sentiment toward AI-linked power demand rather than on fundamentals. The target cuts appear to reflect execution timing risk, not a deterioration in the story. The $9 billion Trench Group deal adds integration and capital-allocation questions alongside the doubled buyback.
