Why Hexcel Stock Crashed After Earnings
HXL fell 11.8% after Q3 earnings, even though the company topped EPS expectations. The market punished the print because management left full-year guidance unchanged.
HXL posted EPS of $0.50 against the $0.49 consensus. Revenue told a different story: $496.4M came in below the $501.8M analysts expected, a miss of roughly $5.4M. The mixed headline numbers set up a stock already priced for strength to stumble.
Valuation amplified the reaction. HXL trades at more than 33x earnings, a multiple that leaves little room for neutral news. Investors had wanted a raised outlook to justify that premium. Holding guidance flat instead implies the company could fall short of current analyst forecasts for the year. That is interpretation, but the 11.8% drop suggests the market read the unchanged outlook the same way.
The takeaway from the tape: a one-cent EPS beat did not matter. The revenue shortfall and the absence of a guidance raise carried the price action.
