Why Huntington Ingalls Industries Stock Is Heading Higher
Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) surged over 13% after crushing earnings expectations and raising full-year guidance. The defense contractor reported net earnings of $208 million, or $5.27 per share, beating the consensus estimate of $3.82. Revenue climbed 16.7% in the Ingalls Shipbuilding division and 15.3% at Newport News Shipbuilding.
The company lifted its full-year shipbuilding revenue guidance to $10.3 billion and raised its operating margin target to 6.25%. The earnings beat of 36.8% year-over-year represents one of the strongest quarterly performances for the naval shipbuilder in recent quarters.
Management pointed to escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and Ukraine as demand drivers for naval vessels, underpinning the revised outlook. The two shipbuilding divisions—responsible for constructing aircraft carriers, destroyers, and amphibious assault ships for the U.S. Navy—are seeing accelerated order activity.
