Why Intel Stock Crashed on Friday
INTC plunged 28.58% on Friday after management issued fourth-quarter guidance that fell well short of Wall Street's numbers.
Intel guided Q4 revenue to $15-16 billion against analyst expectations of $17.1 billion. The EPS forecast of $0.25 landed far below the $0.43 consensus. That is a miss of roughly 41% on earnings at the guidance level.
The guide overshadowed real strength in one segment. Data center and AI sales surged 78% to $7.3 billion. PC processor revenue moved the other way, falling 5%. The article attributes the decline to soaring memory chip prices straining corporate IT budgets.
Two additional pressures weighed on the stock: an accident at Intel's Israeli factory, and expectations that memory chip shortages will persist through the end of the decade. Interpretation: the shortage outlook suggests the PC weakness may not be a one-quarter problem, which likely explains why the market punished the stock despite the 78% data center gain.
