Why International Paper Rallied Today
IP surged 7.6% after reports that two private equity firms may bid for International Paper's European business, DS Smith, in a deal that could reprice the company's balance sheet.
The potential sale is estimated at less than $6 billion. International Paper paid $9.9 billion for DS Smith in 2024, so a sale at that level would lock in a loss of roughly 40% on the acquisition. The proceeds would still matter: International Paper carries $8.5 billion in net debt, and a sale near the estimated range would retire a meaningful share of it.
The rally comes with a caveat. The company's North American segment is showing declining revenue and operating income. That is the core business left after a DS Smith exit, and it is deteriorating. Interpretation: the market is rewarding balance-sheet relief, not an operating turnaround, and a one-day 7.6% pop built on bid reports does not change the weak trend in the remaining segment.
Note the sourcing, too. The move rests on reports that private equity firms "may" bid, not on a signed deal or confirmed terms. Until a transaction is announced, the sale price and the debt-reduction math remain estimates.
