Why Pentair Stock Popped This Morning

PNR jumped 12.2% after Pentair posted Q1 earnings of $1.18 per share on $976 million in sales, topping analyst expectations even as the underlying year-over-year numbers weakened.

The decline is real: sales fell 4%, operating profit dropped 15%, and net earnings slid 19%. Pool sales fell 18%, which the company attributed to inventory realignment. The market looked past those figures, and the beat versus consensus drove the move.

The cash flow line gave bulls something to hold. PNR generated $152.5 million in free cash flow for the quarter. Management also reaffirmed full-year guidance, with expected Q4 growth of 8%.

The valuation question is where the pushback sits. The analyst behind the article flags that PNR trades at about 12x price-to-free cash flow, while long-term growth forecasts sit at only 5%. Interpretation: after a 12.2% pop, the stock is pricing in recovery that the guidance has yet to deliver, since the 8% Q4 growth target depends on pool inventory normalizing.
