Why Rigetti Computing Popped Today
Rigetti Computing (RGTI) jumped as much as 12.2% after securing $100 million in CHIPS Act funding from the Department of Commerce to advance superconducting quantum computing research. The government will take a minority, non-controlling equity stake in the company as part of the deal.
The award marks one of the first direct federal investments in quantum computing infrastructure under the CHIPS and Science Act. Rigetti reported just $5.1 million in revenue during Q2, underscoring the company's pre-commercial status. The funding will support buildout of fabrication and research capabilities for quantum processors.
While the capital injection provides a runway extension and federal validation, Rigetti remains a high-risk bet on quantum computing commercialization, a technology still years from widespread adoption. The equity dilution is modest given the non-controlling nature of the government's stake, but investors should weigh the funding against the company's nascent revenue base.
