Why Rocket Lab Stock Skyrocketed Last Week
Rocket Lab (RKLB) announced it will acquire satellite operator Iridium Communications for $8 billion in a 50-50 cash-and-stock transaction, sending RKLB shares up 24% last week. The deal marks Rocket Lab's biggest strategic pivot from pure launch services into satellite operations.
The acquisition gives Rocket Lab immediate access to Iridium's constellation of 66 operational satellites, valuable spectrum licenses, and a subscriber base of 2.55 million users. The move is designed to diversify revenue streams and tap into Iridium's recurring cash flows from satellite communications services.
Despite the operational rationale, valuation concerns loom. Analysts flag that Rocket Lab currently trades at 82 times sales, a premium multiple that leaves little room for execution risk. The company must now integrate a complex satellite network while digesting a deal worth more than twice its recent market capitalization.
The transaction combines hardware manufacturing with an operating communications business, positioning Rocket Lab as a vertically integrated space infrastructure company rather than a launch provider competing primarily on payload delivery.
