Why Synopsys Stock Soared on Thursday
SNPS jumped 12.5% Thursday after management used its Investor Day to guide for revenue growth of up to 15%, reaching $11.2 billion in 2027. That tops the $11 billion analyst expectation, a roughly $200 million gap that drove the repricing.
Beyond the top line, Synopsys projected a 20.7% operating profit margin and non-GAAP margins averaging 44%. The spread between those two figures is the heart of the debate now facing the stock.
Valuation hinges on which earnings measure you trust. On GAAP earnings, SNPS trades at a P/E of 58x. On non-GAAP earnings, the multiple compresses to 25.4x. Free cash flow offers a tiebreaker of sorts: the stock trades at approximately 25x FCF, a figure that lines up with the non-GAAP multiple rather than the GAAP one. Interpretation: cash generation appears to support the non-GAAP framing, though the 58x GAAP reading shows the premium isn't cheap by headline measures.
The 12.5% move prices in a lot of the beat. With guidance now above consensus, the bar for execution rises.
