Why T-Mobile US Stock Dropped Today
TMUS fell 5% after Bloomberg reported that SpaceX (SPCX) plans to lease 80,000 cellphone towers and build a fourth major U.S. mobile network, putting it in direct competition with TMUS, VZ, and T.
SpaceX already holds spectrum purchased for its Starlink Mobile service and plans to launch 15,000 direct-to-cell satellites. Combined with the tower leases, that points to a terrestrial and satellite footprint aimed at the same customers the three incumbents serve.
The margin gap is the core of the bear case. SpaceX's Starlink Connectivity business runs a 45% operating margin, roughly double TMUS's 22%. Interpretation: a competitor earning twice the margin can price aggressively and still stay profitable, which raises the risk of further margin compression for TMUS. That is analysis, not a reported outcome, and the report has not yet been tied to any announced pricing action.
The 5% drop was concentrated in TMUS in the coverage, but the report names VZ and T as targets of the same competitive threat. Interpretation: sympathy pressure on both is a reasonable expectation if the plan gains credibility.
