Why Viking Therapeutics Stock Skyrocketed on Tuesday
VKTX surged 35.67% Tuesday after the company reported phase 2 trial results for obesity drug VK2735 showing participants lost 16% to 19% of body weight over 21 weeks. The trial also demonstrated that patients maintained up to 97% of their weight loss using flexible dosing schedules, a differentiation that could matter in commercial uptake.
Discontinuation rates were low, signaling strong tolerability compared to gastrointestinal side effects that have plagued competitor drugs. The data positions VKTX as a credible entrant in the obesity market, which analysts project will reach $150 billion by 2035.
VKTX now competes directly with established players LLY and NVO, both of which have multi-billion-dollar franchises in GLP-1 receptor agonists. The weight-loss data puts VKTX's efficacy in the same ballpark as existing therapies, and the flexible dosing could offer a commercial edge if replicated in phase 3.
