Will Hershey's Halloween Week Earnings Trick or Treat Investors?
HSY reports Q3 earnings Oct. 29, and the setup is a tug-of-war between pricing power and shrinking volume. Management already raised 2026 EPS guidance to $8.36-$8.52, a signal the quarter may land on solid footing.
The prior quarter's strength came from price increases and lower cocoa costs. The cost, though, was demand: volume fell 8%. Interpretation: HSY is protecting margins by charging more, and the volume decline shows how much shoppers are pushing back on those higher prices.
The stock has dropped 12% over the past year and trades at a forward P/E of 17. That multiple points to a fairly valued name rather than a bargain, which leaves little cushion if the print disappoints on volume. The prevailing outlook is cautiously bullish.
Three risks frame the downside:
- ▸Price-sensitive consumers: Another sharp volume decline would challenge the pricing-led growth story.
- ▸Potential tariff impacts: A cost headwind that could pressure margins if it materializes.
- ▸El Niño effects on cocoa harvests: A threat to the lower cocoa costs that have supported profitability.
